The Meadows, America’s premier center for the treatment of addiction and trauma, is pleased to present a series of videos in which Dr. Jerry Boriskin discusses post-traumatic stress disorder and complex PTSD.
In the fourth video of his 10-part series, Dr. Boriskin, senior fellow at The Meadows, talks about evidence-based approaches for treating complex PTSD and addictive disorders.
“Evidence-based treatments are vital because we need data,” he explains. “We need reality-based techniques that are not ‘out there’ and harmful.”
Of such “treatments” not based in evidence, Dr. Boriskin says that most are worthless, and some are dangerous. He asserts that such methods can be toxic if applied in the wrong manner to the wrong client at the wrong time.
But Dr. Boriskin maintains that evidence-based science alone is not the answer: “What is best is a confluence of science and art. The evidence-based techniques need to be blended with the arts, which is the clinician.”
In other videos in his series, Dr. Boriskin addresses the nature of complex PTSD, treatment goals for PTSD, and the relationship between PTSD and addiction.
